When I first purchased this book, it was an impulse purchase on the way to the airport for a 4.5 hour flight. I had been listening to NPR, and the particular show discussed the book and included a few interview comments by the author, Rachel Pearson. This book is written with the eloquence of someone who is a skilled writer passionate about her work in medicine. She cleverly juxtaposes the journey and life of becoming a doctor alongside patient stories and her own families experience on one side of healthcare issues. It is a sensitive and compassionate look inside the medical world in a way that makes me want to read more stories like hers — so many more. Alas, stories like this are rare. Her honesty and beautiful narrative storytelling made me smile and cry. Ultimately, No Apparent Distress left me with a lot of questions to problems we don't have answers for yet. This book is an enjoyable and accessible read for anyone interested in the topic, but undergraduate policy students, those seeking public service work, those pursuing a medical degree, and anyone who plans on working with marginalized populations, will find the increasing importance of the topics Dr. Pearson covers. Reading it was certainly a turning point for me that has driven my interest in healthcare policy.

I found this book very interesting because the author, Rachel Pearson, told the story of her medical school education at the institution where I was a basic science faculty member for about 33 years. She was probably out in the crowd in one of the Levin Hall lecture rooms as I taught in my last year there. Her perspective as a medical student, and particularly her experience providing medical care to indigent patients at St. Vincent's Clinic gave me a perspective that I had not gained in all those years of teaching and doing research. I hope she will continue to tell her story as she progresses in her career. I also hope that some of those politicians who do not think that providing medical care to those who have no financial means to access it should not be the responsibility of all of us, through our governments.

Dr. Pearson writes about her experiences as a medical student at the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. She relates moving stories of caring for individuals without health insurance at a student-run free clinic. She vividly displays the moral complexity of trying to incrementally improve patients' welfare and the distress that results from making mistakes.

With gifted story telling, the author gives us insight into the life of a medical student with a heart for the underserved. She learned that we all make mistakes and must learn to acknowledge them, apologize, make amends where possible and live with ourselves afterward. Kudos for your willingness to share your story thereby making it easier for the rest of us to share ours.

I grew up in Corpus and now in the medical field. I truly enjoyed reading about the struggles and reality physicians go through. I came across this book in a local magazine and so glad, I chose to read it. Makes me happy with the decision I made to work in the medical field.

I was particularly interested in this book because I know some of the parties, places, and incidents involved. This book gives a penetrating, though often disheartening, view of modern medical practice in the USA, especially how the poor suffer serious neglect.

The author, a young medical school student and physician, provides a compelling personal memoir and offers informed and often sobering insights into medical practice in the U.S., especially as it pertains to medical care for those who are least able to afford it. Highly recommended.

A great personal story of the experiences in becoming a doctor and caring for those who do not have resourses. It is revealing about the difficulties, disappointments, joys and learning process experienced. This book puts a human face on the recipients of care and the providers, both of whom struggle uphill.

I know Ecuador and Hall is very specific when talking about locations and events involving politics and militaries. Too bad that Hall could't get Jaramilo to show him the exact location of the real treasure cave. The question is that if Jaramillo is the only one who knew the location along with his deceased uncle called "Pelado" but who knows if Jaramillo lied?There is a library and there is treasure and it should be statues and things from an ancient civilization, but to asure a location and never revealed tells that something is wrong.I know there are remains of ancient civilizations all over the planet and there is no doubt about it.This book is really clear and tells details and events unknow about the Tayos cave and the Tayus treasure. This book is really interesting and has a lot of evidence.

What a great book and a very enjoyable read. Everything is laid out perfectly to take you on a wondrous adventure. This is one of those books that you will read over and over again over the next 20 years. Mr. Hall did a fantastic job in telling you about his exciting tale of the search for the tablets. I know one day we will find them and we will find out how close he really was. Buy it, read it, re-read it and enjoy.

This is a pretty interesting read. Who knew that Neil Armstrong went caving in Ecuador on a biology mission that was a front for a mission to find lost remnants of an ancient advanced race? So, instead of getting bored, I suddenly found myself elated when finally, after the author has built step by step a pyramid of the best suspense ever, the reader finds himself (or herself) in the middle of this promised treasure cave.Oh, poor Aladdin, oh, poor Ali-Baba: they didn`t even dreamed to a such a generous wealth elevated by the purity of the materials and the profoundness of the objects` significance.In the Tayus cave various rooms are hosting workshops full of figurines of all kind of animals, even unknown in the American Continents, strange scenes like that of a golden human skeleton lying on a crystal bed, sculptures of mixed human and animal beings, altogether like the models and blueprints for an experimenting Creator.The serenity of the final considerations in which the author leaves those information as an inheritance for the whole humankind is enriching the book with a supplemental dimension. The dimension of a message about the history of consciousness. A present human consciousness that is gradually growing to become equal with that of the ancients that provided the dreamed richness that are the object of this wonderful book.

Wishing it was written more like a historical novel. A little too much deviation from topic to topic. As though the author was distracted at times.

About the Author JONATHAN EARLE (Ph.D., Princeton University) is Associate Professor of History at the University of Kansas, where he is also Associate Director for Programming at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics. In 2005, Earle was named a OTop Young HistorianO by the History News Network. His book Jacksonian Anti-Slavery and the Politics of Free Soil, 1824-1854 won the James A. Broussard Best First Book Award from the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic. Earle has also authored many scholarly articles and book chapters on abolitionism, the history of the early republic, and John Brown. He has received fellowships from the NEH and the American Council of Learned Societies."
