Adam has a knack for helping others who struggle with their own issues, including his half-brother, Sweetie, who has regular meltdowns; his mother, who is a hoarder; and his best friend, Ben, who has a weight problem. Unfortunately, he is so consumed with his own counting, tapping, and difficulties entering thresholds that he does not realize his gifts. Through Adam, Toten examines the trials and tribulations of OCD head on, but Adam also deals with the usual teenage problems of love, friendships, school, and divorced parents. Readers will relate to Adam's anxieties and root for him as his relationship with Robyn develops. I belong to a Young Adult book group (I'm just about to turn 50 but I still love reading kid lit and YA novels... good ones). And this is a GREAT one. My friend who has a 14 year old daughter told me about this book so I looked into it. Love that it's a memoir. Love the theme and I wish I had this book when I was in school. I suggested it to our book group and we decided to all read it. I thought I'd read it and pass it along to my friend's daughter, but I think I'll have to keep it. I'll definitely would enjoy reading it again. I'll buy another copy to give to my friend's daughter. Again, I can't tell you how delighted I am with the whole thing. Her awesomely supportive family, the whole idea of how she followed Betty's 1950's book to the letter (vaseline on the eyelids and wearing panty girdles! Who knew they still even made panty girdles!), and Maya's utter bravery. Wow. I could not have done that at her age. I'm not sure I could do it now. What I didn't realize when I first heard about the book is that she told no one that's what she was doing, following the advice of this 1950's book. No one except her family knew, not even her best friend Kenzie. Where it REALLY got me was the month of April's theme: "A Popular Attitude". And then everything starts tying together. It's a wonderful lesson for anyone at any age. No spoilers here (that's a pet peeve of mine) but you will NOT be disappointed. I am so thrilled for Maya. It was a wonderful read. And such a satisfying ending. There's not one little thing I didn't adore. Can't wait for the movie. Also, kudus go out to whoever designed and illustrated the book cover. Love. Love. Love.

My 11yo 6th grader is an avid reader. Here is her review:--- "Maya is an unpopular girl finishing her 8th grade year with an interesting experiment. She is reading "Betty Cornell's Teenage Popularity Guide", a book from the 1950s. She's hoping the experiment will help her find confidence and discover the true meaning of popularity. As a middle-schooler myself this was a fun book and it teaches some important lessons. Some of the things she does are so funny, especially compared to how we are now. It is emotional and was written very well, I felt like I could relate to Maya. It remind me of a realistic Dork Diaries, with Maya's honesty and silliness. I think it is a great book for all Middle School girls to read!"

I’m not sure what I was expecting when I started reading this book, but it wasn’t this. I liked that Maya’s personality was entirely present, and that we were able to learn so much about her simply by learning of her decision to start the experiment. I liked her family, and a few of the other characters, and I liked that that we had interactions and scenes that didn’t seem to relate with the experiment, but in the end they all were part of Maya’s final realizations. The story felt a little repetitive at times, and I had this feeling from the writing that I was reading a fictionalized version of what happened, even though deep down I know I wasn’t. So maybe that’s really a positive thing. But overall it was simply a good book, and I’m glad I read it.

I rarely give a book 5 stars, so when I do it must be good. Popular by Maya van Wagenen was like a non- annoying reality tv series- it had a diverse amount of emotions and the people could be seen changing over time. The one thing I disliked, however ,was that it had that often used, changed mindset ending. At the end, Maya says she now knows that popularity isn't" clothes, hair, or even possessions. When we let go of these labels we see how flimsy and relative they actually are. Real popularity is kindness and acceptance. It is about who you are, and how you treat others." That was a beautiful set of sentences, but I'm sorry that's just not how it works, as much as we like to believe it is. In my school especially, an I'm sure in other schools, the popular people AREN'T nice and DO have fancy possessions. In the end, I applaud Maya's willingness to try this insane experience and open herself up to new things, because it's extremely hard. "Popular" is a book that resonates with so many people going through the unfair popularity trials of MS , including myself. Her humorous wit also made me connect to her even more, and made the book enjoyable to read. I would recommend this book for anyone in middle school/ early HS, especially someone going through the whole "why does it seem like nobody likes me" and " Why does popularity seem based on such fickle things" phase. A great, non fiction, easy to connect to, book."This is the time to remember that I'm the protagonist in my own story, facing every challenge with grace and wit."

I liked Maya's style of writing and thought she was a pretty talented and ambitious young woman. I related with her story quite a lot. The part where she writes on the bathroom wall, "remember the girl in pearls" I thought was a little self-absorbed though. Sure she made outcasts feel more involved and worked hard at getting to know all kinds of people and that is definitely brave. It's just her friend wrote, "So and So BFFE" and she writes, "Remember ME"…kind of put me off. I feel bad though, Maya is young and I know she didn't mean it like that and I am possibly thinking out of line but still. The things Maya did do was ambitious and inspiring and I thought it was very neat that a 13 year old would be thinking of a writing career already. Her relationship with her writing teacher was also very special and I really liked her family dynamic. I was definitely not as brave as her when I was 13! All in all it was an entertaining read and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Van Wagenen

A pioneer of jazz French horn and World Music, he is also a virtuoso on piano, numerous flutes and whistles, percussion, and dozens of folkloric instruments from twenty-five countries. He is also an inventive, funny improvisational lyricist. He has collaborated with Leonard Bernstein, who chose him as the New York Philharmonic’s first composer-in-residence in 1966, Langston Hughes, Dizzy Gillespie, Willie Nelson, Thelonious Monk, Odetta, Elia Kazan, Arthur Miller, Charles Mingus, Wynton Marsalis, Lionel Hampton, Johnny Depp, Tito Puente, and many others. Sayles does lay out a few sales pitches for his additional products in this book, which is a bit of a pain, but his information is spot on and very valuable. A good fast read that you can return to for reference.

About the Author

Gregory Boyle is the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, CA. Now in its 30th year, Homeboy traces its roots to when Boyle, a Jesuit priest with advanced degrees in English and theology, served as pastor of Dolores Mission Church, then the poorest Catholic parish in Los Angeles, which also had the highest concentration of gang activity in the city. Homeboy has become the largest gang-intervention, rehabilitation, and reentry program in the world, and employs and trains gang members and felons in a range of social enterprises, as well as provides critical services to thousands of men and women each year who walk through its doors seeking a better life. Father Boyle has received the California Peace Prize, the James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year Award, and the University of Notre Dame’s Laetare Medal. It is written by Boyleand it is a beautiful story of his work in Los Angeles withthe forgotten children who turn to gangs to find love.He is there for these young people, they just need to ask.He has buried 100s of the innocent and the guilty, but he has saved thousands. This book is filled with his stories. Mostmake you cry. He is beloved by the people of this violentneighborhood. Even those who don't accept his help respectFather Boyle and his work. He speaks the language of the gangs.He visits them in jail and the hospital. He finds them jobs, he listens,he lends them money, and most importantly he really really cares. Finally,he buys them suits and takes them with him to the White House.

What an unbelievable story! I remember visiting Father Boyle about 20 years ago with a class. He seemed kind and gentle but he also seemed tired. So I after that visit, I didn't think about his ministry much.I came across the book when I saw it featured in a bookstore and decided to give it a try.I had stopped reading for the past decade or two. It has been mostly Netflix and Kdrama.I would start books and then never get past page 30.This wasn't just a book you coudln't put down. It's a book that grabbed a hold of you and shook you to your core.What a hero! What a man of God! What guts! What complete abandon!No wonder he looked exhausted (when I saw him 20 years ago).I was reminded of apostle Paul's paradoxical statement about his life and ministry 2 Cor 6"We put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything."Another reason why I feel such a deep sense of respect and admiration for Father G is that after my senior year in college, I went and worked in the inner city of Camden, New Jersey for 6 weeks and it was one of the toughest times of my life.We worked with kids and teenagers in one of the most gang/crime/drug infested parts of the country.I felt so overwhelmed and helpless. It was affecting me emotionally and physically.Such a ministry is not done casually - it doesn't happen unless you give yourself completely to the community and put your life on the line.And it's not something you do in your own strength and wisdom.Father Greg is often on the news and he does get some publicity - but not enough. Compare what he does to the billions of dollars spent on the war against drugs, against gangs, against crime.He is a one man war on gang/crime/drugs. And he's winning because his weapon is the love of Christ incarnated daily in his life.

To justify my answer, I have worked for the past 7 years in a maximum security "correctional" facility for adjudicated adolescent males. There are many similarities between the events Father Boyle describes and those I am involved with. Corrections does not work...correction for these youth has becoming a training ground for gangs, crime and promotion to the "big boy jails and Penitentaries". Father Boyle's book is the most profound and relevant literature I have found on helping troubled, at-risk youth positively develop and become participating members of society. His subtitle "The Power of Boundless Compassion" leads into an incredible dialog and primer for positively accomplishing good changes in the lives of these youth. It is heartwarming and more than encouraging to read, study and digest this book. Father Boyle's approach and methods, if taken to heart and sincerely utilized, would vastly improve the lives of many young men and women while enriching our society and economy. This book has impacted me on a huge scale and has vastly improved my abilities to interact with and provide a much better environment for the growth and development of our troubled youth. this book has helped me to be more compassionate and, in doing so, is impacting the life of others.

Father Greg, or G-dog, as he is called, started Homeboy Industries in the roughest gang- capitol area of Los Angeles. A gang intervention program of this magnitude is not for the weak-kneed or for someone that thinks "I'll come and serve because I am better than they are"....This program for gang intervention and Father Boyle gets to the root or these individuals and families because he lives among them, he serves alongside the gangs and he loves them as Jesus intends us to love others.Don't read this book if you are offended by colorful language, for G-dog tells it like it is. And he lets his gang members do the same. You will learn about the different gangs and their interactions, yet will know no names. G-dog doesn't give any individual gang the glory...he treats them all equally. As I finished this book, I knew I would have a hard time living among the gangs, but God has called us all to different parts of the body. G-dog gets involved in so many lives, from before birth as he tells of a young girl gang-raped and pregnant, to handling over 150 funerals of gang members, many of which he has known since childhood. Thank you, Father Boyle, for serving where God prepared you to serve.The book is written from over 30 years of working among the gangs through Homeboy Industries. The stories abound with courage, faith and with laughter. You'll find yourself laughing out loud and wiping your eyes, either with amusement or hurt for a fellow human. About the Author

George A. Morgan is an Emeritus Professor of Education and Human Development at Colorado State University. He received his Ph.D. in child development and psychology from Cornell University. In addition to writing text books on SPSS and research methods, he has advised many PhD students in education and related fields. Over the past 35 years, he has conducted a program of research on children’s motivation to master challenging tasks.

Nancy L. Leech is an Associate Professor of Education and Human Development at University of Colorado Denver. She received her Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis on research and statistics from Colorado State University. She currently teaches master’s and PhD level courses in research, statistics and measurement. Her area of research is promoting new developments and better understanding in applied qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodologies.

Gene W. Gloeckner is an Associate Professor of Education at Colorado State University. He received his Ph.D. in education from The Ohio State University. Much of his writing has focused on research methods issues in both qualitative and quantitative research areas. He has been teaching research design and statistics for more than 25 years. He has advised many doctoral students (over 20) and has served as the research methodologist on many doctoral committees.

Karen C. Barrett is a Professor of Human Development and Family Studies with a joint appointment in Psychology at Colorado State University. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Denver. She is Assistant Department head of HDFS and teaches graduate level research methods and statistics courses. Her research regards emotion regulation and its influence on development; social emotions such as guilt and shame; and family and cultural influences on emotions.
